Why quality control in China matters more than ever

China remains the world's largest manufacturing base, but distance makes quality control harder. By the time a defective container arrives at your warehouse, the cost of fixing it can exceed the value of the goods. That is why serious importers build quality control in China into every order — before production, during production and before shipment.

The three checkpoints of import quality control

A complete quality control plan covers three stages:

  • Pre-production — initial production check (IPC) verifies the first batch against your approved sample and specifications, so problems are found before mass production runs.
  • During production (DUPRO) — inspectors visit while goods are being made, checking quality trends, production progress and factory discipline while there is still time to correct.
  • Pre-shipment inspection (PSI) — a final random check, normally using AQL sampling, before the goods are packed and shipped.

How AQL sampling works

Most pre-shipment inspections use the AQL (Acceptance Quality Limit) standard. Instead of checking every product, the inspector randomly samples a statistically meaningful quantity and counts defects by severity: Critical, Major and Minor. If defects stay within the agreed AQL level, the batch is accepted; if not, it is rejected and the factory must improve and rework.

Factory audits catch problems inspections cannot

Inspections check the goods; audits check the factory. A third-party factory audit evaluates capability, quality systems, capacity, and compliance — helping you qualify new suppliers and monitor existing ones before you commit large orders.
