## PPK Process Performance Index: What It Is, How to Calculate It and When to Use It PPK is one of the most widely used process performance indices in manufacturing quality control. It tells you how well your **entire production process** - including all common and special cause variation accumulated over time - fits inside the specification limits. ### PPK vs CPK: What Is the Difference? CPK and PPK both measure capability, but they answer different questions: - **CPK** uses *short-term* variation estimated from rational subgroups. It asks: "If the process stays in control, can it hold tolerance?" - **PPK** uses *overall* variation of all individual measurements. It asks: "Looking at everything we have produced, does the process actually meet specification?" PPK is therefore the more realistic indicator for **ongoing production performance**, especially when you cannot easily form rational subgroups or when the process runs in long, continuous batches. ### The PPK Formula - **Pp = (USL - LSL) / 6σ** - the potential capability, based on the specification width relative to overall spread. - **Ppk = min[(USL - μ) / 3σ, (μ - LSL) / 3σ]** - the actual capability, which also accounts for how centred the process is. Here μ is the overall mean and σ is the overall standard deviation of all individual measurements. Ppk is always equal to or smaller than Pp. ### How to Interpret PPK Values - **Ppk ≥ 1.67** - Excellent. The process comfortably meets specification with margin. - **Ppk 1.33 - 1.67** - Capable. Generally acceptable for most products. - **Ppk < 1.33** - The process does not meet specification adequately. Investigate variation and centring, then improve. ### How to Use the Free PPK Template Our free editable PPK template gives you a complete study in one workbook: 1. Enter your USL, LSL, target, unit and sample size in the parameter cells. 2. Type up to 40 individual measurements into column B - the sample numbers are pre-filled. 3. The mean, overall standard deviation, **Pp and Ppk calculate automatically**. 4. Read the built-in capability judgment (Excellent / Capable / Not Capable) and the Pp target check. The template is formatted with the QCANT professional layout and locked for consistent use - you only edit the data cells. Every sheet is protected so the structure and formulas stay intact for your team. ### When to Run a PPK Study - **Initial process performance validation** before accepting a new process or supplier - **Quarterly or annual capability reviews** of running production - **After major changes** - new material, new equipment, re-layout or new operators - **Customer-requested capability evidence** for PPAP and ongoing monitoring PPK is especially relevant when you source from China: it gives you a single, defensible number to evaluate whether a factory process can consistently hold your specification before you commit to large volumes. ### Common Mistakes to Avoid - Using CPK (subgroup) formulas when you only have individual measurements - this overstates capability. - Comparing PPK against the wrong specification - always verify USL/LSL against the latest drawing or PO. - Ignoring centring - a wide Pp means nothing if Ppk is low because the process mean sits off-target. - Running a study on unrepresentative data - sample across shifts, machines and operators. ### Download the Free PPK Template Ready to run your own process performance study? **Register a free account** on QCANT to download the editable PPK template, together with our complete quality toolkit - FMEA, 8D, CPK/Control Chart, GRR, CMK and more.
